I Shot That Bird

I shot that bird. I shot him down. I could not let him be free.
Was the bird my spirit? Was i hunting me?
I picked the one I felt ugliest, but when I saw him on the ground
His beauty took my breath away. My pride replaced with shame.

Waited all day for my brother to get home from the field.
I wanted praise for my prize. That bird whose chest couldn't rise.
That blinding beauty consumed me; Had to hold it in my hands.
Life's only there if it's free. It can't be owned for this to be.

When will I stop trying to be great? My place it's small.
Let being loved be enough
Learn to be true. To those by my side?
I think I'll give it a try. My God I feel so light,
without all that pride!
I saw that bird on the power line.
I let him fly away this time. I want my soul to be free.
It can't be owned for this to be.
