Carolina

A hair's breadth, a moments space is all we have
We bloom in slowness, wither fast, watch the winter pass

I never took you to the place that held my buried feelings
You never found that sacred peace to keep from leaving

Carolina, oh I miss her like a lost love in a poem
Tobacco rows, and fence line runs, and the cows come home
Turpentine heels on her storied grounds
She watched me grow from boy to man, learn to take my stands

In her mountains, at 22, I had a thought of you
You fell in love, fell on hard times, and found your life line
You broke me like a habit hard and clean

Carolina, oh I miss her like a lost love in a poem
Tobacco rows, and fence line runs, and the cows come home
Turpentine heels on her storied grounds
She watched me grow from boy to man, learn to take my stands

When I die, I want to be laid in her foothills
When my body has lost the last traces of the painkillers
