Smiling on the Inside

The beaten road passes underfoot
The shield weighs heavy on my arm
You get used to the rain
But the wind can cause some harm

It's my first time travelling
I've never been down this road
Already we've travelled many's a mile
But as soldiers must keep marching on

Up ahead the castle walls come into view
Already we can hear the screams
Looking around, the faces of the others hide their fear
But their eyes give them away
We were called to help our neighbours
From the wrath of the enemy

But it seems we're too late
The battle's already over, just the carnage left behind
Inside the walls it's a complete disaster
With corpses all around and the valuables all gone
Widows and children crying, a picture of nightmares
But then I realise

I'm smiling on the inside 'cos I wasn't here at all
I missed the enemy bring that fear inside the wall
I am alive, I would have been destroyed
But I can't celebrate for look at all these people
These people who have died
