For Betty and Irving

In those years, girls used to play hard to get
Meaning, they sort of kept their emotions within
I didn't want him to see that I'm going there just to meet him
But actually, I was really going there to see if he would walk by again
But I played a little hard to get

So, I went shopping
It must have been 45 minutes
And when I came back, lo and behold
My mother says to me, "A young man of the name Irving called"
I said, "Ah ha! My trick worked"
You see I didn't go? Played hard to get, he called
And he asked me out for a date
People were very formal in those years
So we made a date to go out that weekend
And I couldn't believe it, he took me to a Broadway show
I always thought that maybe some girl turned him down
And that's how he got an extra ticket
But it turned out, that wasn't the case
