My Lady
Once upon a time
I knew a court like thine.
They let me taste their wine
and step with them in kind.
My Lady was so admired;
her people had all they required.
Did you know she longed to laugh and sing
and dance like flowers do in spring?
Yet there she stood, said 'I must do good, I'm listening.'
The crowds line up to tell their woes -
of the paths that they have chose,
of the doors that they saw close.
Their anger they did impose.
My Lady felt every word.
It hurt her but she was undeterred.
Did you know the wellness of her people
was to her a steeple?
So there she stood and said, 'they must feel understood, I'm listening still.'
Oh My Lady, I fear what's to come.
Please hear your body out before what's done is done.
Life is so short but it's the longest race to run.
You can still do good when you set boundaries for everyone.
I promise you that you were good before this all began.
What if she knew what I knew now?
To everyone, you cannot bow.
That your needs you must allow.
To honour yourself you must avow.
My Lady was so tired.
Her people took all they desired.
Did you know her health was in decline?
My Lady was no longer mine.
So there she wept, and overslept, for good did she pine.
And still the people wanted more
and came in their hoards to implore
that she now see what was in store -
give prescient warnings and be sure.
Our Lady was nigh expired.
She knew what she must now do and she enquired:
Did you know I'm human, just like you?
I can't do what you ask me to,
I can't move mountains - wouldn't want to,
I forget what I'd hoped to do.
But I care so much and I love you -
I've stood here all these years for you,
and here I stand, I ask for your hand, please - I need you.
Oh My Lady, look what has become.
You heard yourself and now step out into the sun.
Life is so short but it's truly an honour to run.
You can still do good when you set boundaries for everyone.
I promise you that you were good before this all began.
I promise you that you'll be good now all is said and done.
I promise you your life is yours you don't owe anyone.
I knew a court like thine.
