Election Song (It's Gonna Be Ok)
Back in 2020 when Trump and Covid reigned.
Me and Ray did some drivin', out on the interstate
Two men more damn different, you wouldn't hope to find
But after forty days and nights and thirty thousand miles behind
Ray and me we found a way to set aside the hate
And we stole a little peace of mind along that strange highway
Twenty bad days in Fontana had become a hundred three
When the state of California closed the DMV
Ray was the last set of eyes assigned by the company
To see if I should be employed, if not they'd cut me free
Ray was in a MAGA cap at the terminal where we deployed
I'd just been on CNN arrested for protesting George Floyd
At first I tried to hide my stripes; Jane Goodall with her apes
Peppered him with questions to reveal his twisted take
But Ray was smart and he fooled me and he baited me you know
And when I raged in fury he smiled with a knowing glow
It ain't what we donno that hurts us
It's what we know for sure that just ain't so
We can't fix each other, we gotta share the open road.
Cause what we gotta carry, how far it's gotta get
Ain't ever gonna get there if both of us know best
Me and Ray we traded shots taking turns behind his wheel
And both of us conceded facts as they became revealed.
The battle cry "you don't know shit," became "Let's look it up"
And as we learned a couple things a nice quiet filled that truck
Now I won't say that Ray was right, we agree to disagree
But when I said goodbye to him, I was sad I had to leave
It ain't what we donno that hurts us
it's what we know for sure that just ain't so
We can't fix each other. We gotta share the open road.
Cause what we gotta carry how far it's gotta get
Ain't ever gonna get there if each of us know best
Now I won't pretend this little song won't piss off some of my friends
Even when I try to remind them, we're all Americans
Everything was closed back then, you couldn't even sit to eat
Dusty winds through Texas, blew thru abandoned streets
Everyone should fight like hell for what they think is right
But tides will turn and history comes clean in the morning light
When we screw up let's admit it, try to make amends
There's no account for who we love no matter how it ends
Cause it ain't what we donno that hurts us
it's what we know for sure that just ain't so
We can't fix each other. We gotta share the open road.
Cause what we gotta carry how far it's gotta get
Never gonna happen if everyone knows best
Me and Ray did some drivin', out on the interstate
Two men more damn different, you wouldn't hope to find
But after forty days and nights and thirty thousand miles behind
