1986

In 1986 I knew more than I thought

I drove a grey Dodge Colt with a Kenwood deck
My poetry was overwrought
Two inch speakers blaring Blood and Chocolate
A sneer I would make my own
I was old enough to reach for more
Too trigger shy to bring it home

Looking for a hook or a ploy
I was an upper middle class white boy
Chasing credibility in a game yet unexplained to me
Knowing that one day we're gonna miss these days

In 1986 I set my sights afar
Got a great reception in the friend zone
In Capezios and Drakkar

Sleeping on a sidewalk outside Ticketron
To see The Unforgettable Fire

It was a year of pride in the name of love
When Bono was declared Messiah

Now my expectations and I
We were always a bit too high
On the promise of a wasted kiss
On the possibility of bliss
On the feeling that one day
We're gonna miss these days

In 1986 our hair was big as it could get
I saw my prom date decimate the ozone layer
With a can of Aquanet

The music ended, some ascended
Some were closer to the bone
We were scared and we were hopeful
Heading for the great unknown

Now my inspiration and I
Gotta make a dent before we die
Blasting through the middle age
Tuning out the noise and rage
Knowing that one day
We're gonna miss these days
Still I'm believing we're gonna miss these days
Gonna miss these days
