Milk & Cookies

Your socks are hanging on the hearth
Your cat slinks underneath a fence
Starlight falls upon the earth
To expose her snowy little prints

What child such wonders can resist
As windows bare such truths
To catch the doting Santa
To listen for his reindeer on his roof

For tonight is December twenty-fourth
And the Elf King must sally from the North
To scale cold squalls over stone walls
For the slumbering youth
But what is this with eyes aglow
Excited by the shine of snow
A sleepless child in a quiet house
With the wildest heart I know

So rest on this pillow of the truth
All your days you'll know you're loved
The best ye little ones can do
Is place milk and cookies by the stove
And quiet your wild little heart
Trust deep in ancient truths
You'll sleep through doting Santa
As precious little children ought to do
