Northern Winds

A maiden fair in tower high
Was hidden from Men's view.
The birds, that roamed the swirling sky,
Were all the joys she knew.
Up there within her tiny room
She dreamed the day would come,
When she'd be rescued from the gloom,
Her prison would be gone.

But dest'ny did not bring to her
A well-respected man.
There would not be a saviour
From neighboured, friendly clan.

The winds were rough when from the East
Some Northmen reached the shore,
Their sails filled with the raging breeze.
Afar they heard them roar.
Within the hour the city fell,
The mighty temple burned.
'Twas left only a single bell,
Its sound rang out unheard.

The maiden was the greatest price
The Northmen took aboard.
None listened to her helpless cries.
The captain was her ward.

For days on end they drifted far
With nowhere to call home.
They sailed and rowed by light of star
Beneath the sky's vast dome.
Respect and truth were offered there
To please the lovely maid,
And gifts to have and jewels to wear
Made her forget the raid.

The captain was a noble man
And she had earned his trust.
He gave her then a freer hand,
Left her alone at dusk.

That night she stole a dagger sharp
And sneaked towards his bed.
She heard the pounding of her heart
And knew she was afraid.
For when she looked upon his face,
She saw his kindness there.
So much changed with this single gaze
Upon his eyes and hair.

She realised she needed him
To soothe her lonely soul.
Then side by side they shared a dream
And were together whole.

United now they sailed away
And stayed upon the sea
By black of night and light of day.
They're ev'rything they need.
