Someone Strange

I wonder why my heart recoils
At the sight of someone out of place
Why do we draw these lines so fast
With a silent wall a judging face?
A stranger's steps a different beat
And suddenly I choose retreat

I pause and wonder deep inside
Why does my heart pull back and hide?
Maybe it's survival maybe it's pride
Maybe just a shield we hide behind
A laugh a stare or turning away
Pretend I've got nothing to say

But then I think - and something shifts
What harm's in someone's awkward drift?
Real danger walks in hidden shade
Not in those who seem outplayed

I've seen someone strange lost in the crowd
Wandering restless trying to hide
In faces strange in voices low
A glimpse of lives we'll never know

If I could pull back try to see
A story wrapped in mystery
A life shaped by unknown roads
Heavy hearts with heavy loads
If I dared to look beyond
Past the quirks that seem so odd
I'd find a heart bruised but bold
Carrying secrets still untold

And so I sense there is a tale
Behind each face that looks so frail
A story strange and raw and wild
The dreams and hurts of an inner child

I've seen someone strange lost in the crowd
Wandering restless trying to hide

A glimpse of lives we'll never know

What if I stepped closer broke the ice
Let curiosity pay the price?
In every face so far away
We'll find a life with much to say
Let's open wide let fear release
To learn what stories never cease
