Home Across Borders / New York Ch 3

Every evening,
Mateo calls Valeria.
The line crackles,
the connection drops sometimes.
She's in Mexico,
at her parents' house.
They went back two months ago.
Life in New York had gotten too expensive.
The rent,
the bills,
the job that never paid enough.
Mateo stayed to finish the season,
save a little more.
The plan was to go back for Christmas.
Valeria talks about the kids.
She asks about his work.
Mateo tells her he's trying to sort out the paperwork,
but his words feel hollow.
Valeria listens quietly.
Maybe she knows something is wrong,
maybe she doesn't want to know.
It's the hope of seeing them again that keeps him going.
The dream of reuniting with his family is all he has left.
