Ask The World

It was 10 o'clock on a Tuesday, on my own for the first night
Making perfect margaritas served with a side of fries
Till a kind smile walked thru the door and sat at the bar
I said, Hi sir, how are you tonight? Can I get you something to drink?
A warm meal and a cold beer is exactly what I think
Along with a little bit conversation wouldn't hurt the time

Well sometimes when you really want it, you gotta ask the world
Sometimes when you really feel it, ya best believe the world

A few bites in he was feeling right and asked something on his mind
Young man, mean no offense tonight but you seem like a fine kind of guy
My question now may be blunt but it truly feels sincere
Why you behind that bar tonight? whatchu really wanna do here?

I feel that I'm just trying to save up
My main love is really jamming in a band
I play drums and we're trying to see the land
If ya understand

He replied with a smile and a twinkle in his eye
How playing the piano always sent him to the sky
But I gave it up a time ago, when I settled for the bottom line below
And right now, I'm kinda missing that decision ya know

Well sometimes when you really want it, you gotta ask the world
Sometimes when you really feel it, ya best believe the world

We were talking about tunes from all of the decades
Getting into rhythm till something he mentioned
Remembered he was gonna learn all the instruments
But never got around until it was distant

Resonating with it so I told him my plot
There was a teal mini bass at the music shop
When we come back from tour I'm a buy that bass
I wanna learn the funk cause this is the way

He said "Man, that's sweet, but why not just buy it right now?"
Because we're saving up for gas and still gotta fix the van
Before we leave in a couple weeks
Wait, but how much is it?
I think about 200
What, it's only $200? Just buy it tomorrow
Ah I wish I could but I just gotta keep saving for this trip man

And he said
Well sometimes when you really want it, you gotta ask the world
Sometimes when you really feel it, ya best believe the world

We went back to the funk now and we're talking bout the James Brown style
Till he asked for forgiveness just for a minute while he grabbed something from his ride
So he left his wallet on the bar and came back with a calm strut and a smile
He said sir, it's been great to meet you, I really enjoyed this night
But I gotta hit the road with an hour to go and I wanna give you this with a goodbye
Then he shook my hand with a wad of cash and told me words I'll never forget
Just follow your dreams
Never give up
And buy that bass tomorrow
I said follow your dreams
Never give up
And buy that bass tomorrow

Cause sometimes when you really want it, you gotta ask the world
And sometimes when you really feel it, just believe in the world
And sometimes when you really want it, you gotta ask the world
But right now, just remember
You better buy that bass tomorrow!

Or whatever it is
That camera, that art set, that dance class
Take that leap
Go after your dreams
And buy that bass tomorrow!

So the very next day
Stopped in Bob's shop
Picked up the bass to keep on the plot
Got back from the road
To Plattsburgh, New York
To get the funk right
And call it Boogie Lights
And it all sparked from a stranger being nice
In the right light
On the right night
So listen to the world, when it speaks up
Keep your dreams up and never give up
yeah
