The Raven's Call

Once upon a dreary midnight while I battled weak and weary
Pondering forgotten volumes of old false history
Just as I was drifting off to sleep
I was suddenly startled by a tapping at the door as though to say
"Nevermore"

Dark and drear in the dead of night
A visitor knocking
I can't figure why

Suddenly I felt like someone standing there was watching me
And I kept saying
"It is just the wind"
But again came the tapping
And I threw open wide the door
And the silence fell around me
Dark and vast as in a dream

Dark and drear in the dead of night
A visitor knocking
I can't figure why

I was crying in the darkness calling out to my lost Lenore
Then I heard it; whispered and so faint
As though the wind were speaking
Uttering the word "Lenore"
And the echo was "Nevermore"

Then through the open door there flew in a raven black as night
And it gazed down with flaming eyes on me
And again in my despair
I called
"Oh Nevermore!"
