Reminder

I've begun to realize
the repetition of my thoughts...
This highway reaches out across the state
where you will never find me.

There's security in distance
that I have never found.
There's a sinking in my stomach,
the words stayed in my mouth.

But I could never get this car
to take me far enough away.

The brink of every feeling,
I'm too afraid to ask.
The days are getting shorter,
like they hope that we would last.

Don't strain your voice with words that have no meaning,
I know you love to hear yourself speak
but repeating what you want to feel
won't make you believe a thing.
And I'm the one that's sorry.

This ethereal reminder:
the choice was mine to make.
The broken glass I walked through,
The flooding from the rain.

The power's out,
I'm a hundred miles away.
I might as well be next to you -
the shadows you keep looking through
so you could find some sort of meaning
to the words you swore were true -
when you said, "No, I could never leave you,"
I never thought that was your mind trying to convince you.
