The Collector

I was going to tell the story of love, gathered ideas of what it was. For some it's a feeling, for
others it's a plan. What kind of love do you think I am? Collecting love stories like a
musical scholar – W. McNeil or A.P. Carter – in the mountains, in the plains, there is
romance, there is pain... some of us find they are one and the same. A song has its roots,
and a love does too – where it comes from and what it goes through – when the language
changes and the melody holds, what will it sound like when we're old? The heart has its
ways of telling the truth – sometimes it has a wall to get through – not every love is meant to
hold on; I've seen it come, I've felt it gone. In any one life, there is more than one love – a
friend, a partner, or the ties of blood – if anyone asks you who wrote this song, tell 'em it
was I and it's almost done.
