Rough Patch

A falling out that went through a rough patch
Where we thought none could possibly grow
Through our garden by the lilies
A weed was creeping silently below

We grabbed our shovels our gloves and our shears
To fight the trouble that we had always feared
But as we conquered through the cries and through the tears
Another weed would always reappear

And though your eyes could sustain the plants with each wistful tear you shed
Through your heart roots do implant feelings I must have misread

So when you steal back your heart
And you steal away through the dark
Well I will tend to the garden
That you neglected from the start

Golden petals would fly away
With each and every approaching autumn day
Now the stem so bare and alone
Could call no garden his home sweet home

And though my thumbs have been stained by the green in the grass
Well your eyes they never strayed no matter how many times I walked past

So when you steal back your heart
And you steal away through the dark
Well I will tend to the garden
That you neglected from the start
