Wehmut, D. 825

A Melancholy Mood

The vespers bell is sounding,
And heavenly peace descends;
The eye tear-filled with sorrow
Alone it closes not.

That my youth is fleeing hence
Alone and unbeloved,
That every blossom withers,
'Tis that, that makes me sad.

And when I found her presence,
Were heart and life pure joy,
And since she left me lonely,
To breathe on is pure loss.

The stream from boulders welling,
The mountains know not love;
The heart alone has feelings,
Will break from sorrow's grief.

O sound now sweet bell ringing,
Into the valley down,
Morning envelops the day,
Like sorrow by the grave.
