The Strike

Hazard, KY
On Halloween
Bullet holes in plate glass windows
Beat all I'd ever seen
It was 1977
Or maybe 78
I remember how the locals said
Don't be out late

Eastern KY
Is a place run on coal
Till the mining strike came
And the blood ran cold
They called out the State Police
And the National Guard
To keep things in hand
But that was gettin' hard

Just hangin' on to what you've got
Hangin' on, it's worth a lot
We understand - just hangin' on
Just hanging on before it's gone

Some thought it was wrong
Some thought it was right
I guess that's the way it is
When you have a strike
I wonder if they learned
From the things that were done
Or is the only thing that really matters
Just cheap coal by the ton

A thousand men with rifles
Just outside of town,
Standing on a ridge
They cut a building down
No dynamite or powder
Just the rifles sound
They just kept shooting
Till it crumbled to the ground
