Something in the Night

In the twin cabin
By the edge of the woods
A stone's throw from the Indian village
There's a knock at the door
In the mosquito of the night
Near a lake
A decade or so ago
Then a second set if knocks
And then they were up
Maybe someone's come to prank us tonight
But a grown woman's voice said
"Wake up guys
The dining hall is on fire."
As soon as we stepped out
We knew something was up
An eerie light reflected off the trees
Unnatural warm breeze blew crackling sounds to us
A low rumbling and an ominous smell
And the whole direction toward the dining hall was a mountain of flame

Then it all fell down
As we stand around
Our eyes water when we finally have to blink
And Bill held Mary
And Joe held Sue
Cuz an outdoor fire at night is a very romantic scene
That's where we stood
Not saying very much
Just staring at where the kitchen used to be
A refrigeration unit
Refused to burn down
Though its days of holding food cold were through
We stayed a long time
Til the light showed in the sky
Just we three and another figure, the walk-in refrigerator

He traces out the span
Of the months they played guitar together
It was a cold February day
When they first met
She was quiet and he smiled kind of shy
They quickly loosened up
But by October she was gone
He reads an entry of a day they laughed and talked
She sat right by his chair
That's when they almost kissed
Now she's dead and he really wishes they had
