It Will Never Be The Same

My first taste of dust came when I was three
Riding on the tractor on daddy's knee
He said son, someday you'll take this place from me
Well you'll raise these fields and do the best you can
To plan a life and be an honest man
And do your best to make your old man proud
Well things would change, we couldn't see eye to eye,
So I packed my things and said goodbye to my home
Where I was born and raised

And the devil, he took me far away
I lost my path and went astray
But in my heart, I knew I'd come back again
After all the wounds had healed
And in my mind I still see those fields
An old dirt road that bears no name
I know it will never be the same

News came mama was laid to rest
And daddy was in pain with every breath
The bank foreclosed and took most of the land
But he kept that house and the old blue barn
Enough to say that he still farmed
But for many years, his health was failing fast
After thirteen years, I headed home
I didn't recognize what I'd known
I cried the day I watched him breathe his last

The devil, he took me far away
I lost my path and went astray
And in my heart, I knew I'd come back again
After all the wounds had healed
And in my mind I still see those fields
An old dirt road that bears no name
I know it will never be the same

His first taste of dust came when he was three
Riding on the tractor up on my knee
I told him son, someday you'll take this place from me
You'll raise these fields and do the best you can
To plan a life and be an honest man
And do your best to make your old man proud
