Tonight Matthew

I give myself away,
my voice slightly out of key.
You notice my mistake,
my moves not quite on the beat,
the rough not quite smooth enough.

Tonight, Matthew, I'll be out of step -
this choreography offends my conscience.
This is my one chance to get it right
in front of a national audience.
I've tried so hard to make the costume fit,
but it was clear that my heart's not in it.
Tonight, Matthew, I will be a Debutante.

Matthew, I'm not sure I'm quite the right
material for best in show.

Just between
you and me
I think this whole shebang
might be a set up.

I'm just making up the words as I go along,
but so far no one's noticed.
And so, pretend you know the words and sing along
with me.

Matthew, I have always tried my best.
You see I turned up to auditions
and I tried so hard to be like all the rest.
Lost in my despondent failure,
I was hit by inspiration bold.
Oh, my apologies, I'm not quite the right material
to be packaged, stickered up and sold.

Just between you and me I have been entertaining suspicions over quite some time -
Matthew, I think this whole damn scene is a set up.
