We Became Aware

We started out so cold
So lost and alone and naked
We pushed our roots as deep
As they could dive into the soil

We struggled to survive
Through a thousand million winters
By force of will we rose
And spread across the mountainsides

We clambered for the feast
And we thought and we talked and we tinkered
We joined our minds as one
We joined our minds as one

We became so strong
Full of hope and full of knowledge
Took each step with pride
And grabbed all there was to take

We became aware
Of our place inside the cosmos
Found we were just specks of dust
On a fleck of nothing

We tried to call for help
But the answer was only static
Our radios went dead
Our radios went dead

And so we closed our tired eyes for just a wrinkle in time
We were lost and alone and our roots had all worn
And the blackness of space and this dismal race
Had left us cold and naked and screaming
We tried to reach for the stars
But they were too hot and far
And so we threw up our hands and we entered the codes
To undo all that we had done

We climbed on top of the world
And now we're on the other side
