A Darker Blue

I misunderstood acted too slow
But when I did I knew what to do
A full day of sensing what would come
Was the sweetest feeling to know
I woke up in a Leonard Cohen album sleeve
Dark wooden furniture, a fan, no TV
In the old parts I was happy and lost
It was so easy to just disappear

From where I sat I would hear
The women talking in the yard
Their English feather-light and fine
Just barely touching on each word

I got trashed and I cared
And let it dampen all my joy
Maybe growing up would be
Not needing the nod of every long lost love
Never used to worry but then I did
About things not working out the way they ought to do
Having to start everything up
So very little came of its own accord

From where I sat I would hear
The women talking in the yard
Their English feather-light and fine
Just barely touching on each word

The lights went off upstairs
In a room that no one else knew
Outside the light slowly turned
Into a darker blue
