Whaler's Prayer

It's cold and it's dark
Here on my watch tonight
And the others are sleeping
Below decks as is right
And they've closed up the galley
And they've killed all the lights
And the others are sleeping
With their eyes shut down tight

And we all pray the same prayer
In our fevery bunks down there
Save us from brine
Save us from brack
Keep our wives lonesome
And let us come some way back

The timbers are creaking
And it's filthy and cold
And I'd rather be swinging
Down there in the hold
And the sperm whales are monstrous
They are angry and bold
And I'd rather see dry land
Than an ocean of gold

And we all pray the same prayer
In our fevery bunks down there
Save us from brine
Save us from brack
Keep our wives lonesome
And let us come some way back
