The Last

Long ago you came to me
All that I could see
A thousand days ahead of us
We took photos of the firsts
Your smiles and steps and words
Life had just begun

Loved you then starting out together
Thought somehow the ride would last forever, but

Days drown in the river of time
I drift back when I close my eyes
Your cries kept us up all night
I held you close till the morning light
You fell asleep in your wind-up swing
Your little laugh was my everything
Sometimes I see the pieces of your past
I never knew they'd be the last

Growing up is part of life
Hellos lead to goodbyes
A thousand days behind us
Now we can't slow down the years
Smiles can't hide the tears
You're growing way too fast

Love you more living life together
Wish somehow the ride would last forever, but

Days drown in the river of time
I drift back when I close my eyes
You climbed up to the monkey bars
Skinned your knee and ran into my arms
Read Dr. Seuss every night at eight
Your little voice when you bowed and prayed
Sometimes I see the pieces of your past
I never knew they'd be the last

The future belongs to you
We've done all we can do
But this much is true

Days drown in the river of time
I drift back when I close my eyes
You moved on from junior high
Didn't need me to give you rides
Wore a jersey for your high school team
Talked to me about your hopes and dreams
Tomorrow soon becomes the past
But in my heart it'll never be the last
