Hey, Maw

We went to milk that evening, as usual, Maw and me
We started, at the setting of the sun
When I had the feedin' finished, and the mules all put away, I yelled
Maw, have you got the milkin' done?

I hollered, ("Hey, maw maw"), but she didn't answer me
I forgot she's hard of hearin', you see
I hollered, ("Hey, maw maw"), then I heasded for the house
I went in through the kitchen
But you weren't nowhere's about

We didn't start to worry, till it was suppertime
Then, as the night began, to pass away
Oh, he got excited, got on the party line
And here's what the neighbors, heard him say

He hollered, ("Hey, Maw Maw"), when are you comin' home?
The supper's cold, it's time, to go to bed
I hollered, ("Hey, Maw Maw"), some must be wrong
I found her Sunday bonnet, she ain't got it, on her head

Neighbors come from miles around, to help us, look for Maw
No one, could figure out, where she was at
Till, early in the morning, about the break of dawn
Here she come, a -pumpin' up the path

She hollered, ("Hey, youngone"), you come here to me
As she broke a limb, from that old hickory tree
I hollered, ("Hey, Maw Maw"), from underneath the floor
I didn't know you was in there, when I locked the stable door
