Deep in the Earth

Excuse me for a minute
'Cause this won't be brief
I've been hiding these words
Under my tongue, protected
By the walls of my yellow-stained teeth.

They've festered and broken
And they've rearranged
They've misspelled themselves
And now they're leaking out of my
Brain

They say ashes to ashes
And dust to dust
But my heart's made of metal
And the clasp's rusted shut

But if these are the last breaths
I'm breathing on earth
Then I pray to God
You remember me when
My body is deep in the earth

My back's ached for years
Carrying my heavy heart
It beats itself silly
And pounds through the dark
Sustaining the life that lives within

And yet was so desperate
To beat in time
It rang in your rhythm
And mimicked your
Rhyme

You can't blame it for trying
Or clinging to love
But love's left my soul
And I've forgotten love
And what's left is your smoky silhouette

But if these are the last breaths
