America

Wednesday is a busy day
With all its ups and downs for her to know
And farewell to her hopes and dreams
She said, "I laid them down a long time ago.

And the distance between freedom and equality
Is a space easily defined
Just take a long look at the man
Who made all his money from all this hard work of mine."

America the free to widen up the gap
Between those who need and those who always have
But I never read about it in my book
In my book

She tried to use her vote today
To get someone who would listen to her needs
Get some money in the schools, give them a fair chance
Get these kids off the street

But she works her second job from four to nine
And you know the polls, they close at five
We wouldn't need affirmative action in this uphill climb
If the system was fine

America the free to widen up the gap
Between those who need and those who always have
But I never read about it in my book
In my book

Never read about it in my book
And I never learned about it in my school
How can we change the world around us with our children
If they never learn about it in the place where seeds are planted
In a time when change can happen and it should

How do we never learn about it in ...
America this can't be
I won't let this be the end
Because I believe something better's in our destiny
But I never read about this in my book
In my book
