Fingerprints in Sand

Every night I try to find some story worth remembering
Where the photos fade to paintings
Where the brush strokes rearrange the things we said there
And the way the clock hands move
I'm looking for the beats between the echoes of our hearts
The inconsistent accents to an unfamiliar part
And I can't find the strength awake to keep the searching up
When sleep won't work but coma's not enough

I don't know the way
But I'm sure that I won't let me down
Let me down
I don't know the way
But I'm sure that I won't let me down
Let me down

Close your eyes
The sun is washed away in black light flashbulbs
Watch the stars strobe out in pattern
All becoming neon lanterns when familiar faces offer nothing new
I leave my fingerprints in sand and start to dig below
To see how far I've fallen
How much I've left to go

I don't know the way
But I'm sure that I won't let me down
Let me down
I don't know the way
But I'm sure that I won't let me down
Let me down

So many things I've seen in dreams have felt so real
But what they mean is lost to me
Though it lives right on my tongue
And so they seem like memories that shift and shimmer in my sleep
And leave me
Always leave me wanting more

I don't know the way
But I'm sure that I won't let me down
Let me down
I don't know the way
But I'm sure that I won't let me down
Let me down

Thaw your thoughts against your pillow
Give yourself some time to dream your life away
Thaw your thoughts against your pillow
Give yourself some time to dream your life away
