December

the wind brushed through the quiet trees
my thoughts were carried by the breeze
to the place they will often go
where ideas plant and worries grow i wonder if and where and when we'll have to start over again
and when at last the time is right
do we walk away and say goodnight

if i could look ahead at what tomorrow has in store
i wonder if i'd trade it for the paths we've walked before
but when time comes and packed cars go, it won't be the end
this december, we'll remember again

you knocked my lights out in a fight
i said that's okay, you said that's alright
we joked in cars we laughed in bars
we went outside and counted stars
we drank we ate we stayed out late
tested alarms and tempted fate
the days were dust placed in a trust
we had to spend, withdraw and bust

on the grass and in the street
we'll leave the ground beneath our feet
there's nothing new for us to do
to stop the tale from coming true
we'll face the fears as the time nears
of leaving those we've known for years
and then at last the time is right
we'll walk away and say goodnight

a toast on high
to days gone by

if i could look ahead at what tomorrow has in store
i wonder if i'd trade it for the paths we've walked before
but when time comes and packed cars go, it won't be the end
this december, we'll remember again
