Did You Love Her

Sunday morning
no different than before
she was sitting with her coffee on our back porch
I took the paper and sat down by her side
and when she looked my way her eyes left nowhere to hide
She said don't lie to me now
cause I deserve after all these years
to know what's in your heart
and if you're worth my tears
Did you love her?
Did the children make you stay?
Had it been only me or her would you've walked away?
Was it just her body?
Or did you want her heart and soul?
I thought I could forget now I've gotta know
I forgave you long ago
even though it still hurts
I thank God that you stayed but I need to hear your words
Did you love her?
I couldn't answer
So surpirsed that she knew
but then every lie must have it's moment of truth
How could I tell her
the reason that I stayed
without causing her more pain
or losing all her faith
trying to find the words was like walking on broken glass
When she finally found the nerve and had to ask
Did you love her?
On our way home
that Sunday after church
I can't imagine what she was feeling or how much it hurt
So I pulled over
and I looked her in the eye
I said I'm sorry you loved a man who's lived this lie
cause all you've ever done is bring sunshine to my days
and you deserve to know your answer
and why I stayed
Yes, I loved her
She touched my heart and soul
and she lead me down a road I swore I'd never go
it wasn't just her body
cause I'm not that kind of man
and it killed me to break her heart I hope you understand
she cried and begged me why
as I walked out of her door
so I told her that I loved her
but I loved you more
Yeah, I loved you more

end
