It's Alright, I Understand

Walk past the kids all skipping class, their nervous smiles and too loud laughs
A cigarette gets passed around the boys
Celebrity becomes implied with their whitened teeth, Cheshire cat smiles
As all around me rushes to the noise
Of a holiday I cannot comprehend rolls slowly as the tram tracks bend around more
Chocking hazard toys
And the ocean laps dyed green under the footpath where the shore once stood proud
But nobody's got time for that now

So I ask for directions even though I know exactly where I am
Just want someone to talk to
Someone to hold their hand against my hand
Say, "It's alright, I understand"
Say, "It's alright, I understand"

And I cannot judge and I cannot hide my coffee teeth and brand name smile
As I'm suckered in by the blinking lights, happy hours, pointless fights
And the taxes I can't comprehend, I don't know how much to tip
Or where the grand experiment goes to get fucked when it gets dark
And I'm magically made to cooperate and the streets round here don't feel the same
As when I would have wanted to walk down every avenue arm in broken arm with you
But now my pre-sunrise respite makes me even less of the right guy

And I'm happy here or comfortable there
But I don't get to say that much
Thought it was another thing we gave up
Thought it was another thing we'd given up

Like having friends, relationships and any chance of stay at home happiness
Remembering dollars and cents and knowing where the fuck I have slept
But I'd give it all up for a shot at this
I wanna make everything, quit every bad habit that I'm in
Remember where I'm from and where I'm going
And find something in me to provide self-esteem
Stop living day-to-day, night-to-night, dream-to-dream
I don't get anything from anything anymore
I don't love anyone anymore

So I ask for directions even though I know exactly where I am
Just want someone to talk to
Someone to hold their hand against my hand
Say, "It's alright, I understand"
Say, "It's alright, I understand"
