Dreams from the Dark Road

You float through my mind most every night
These blue winter shadows give me a fright
You changed my world when you walked in the door
I'm worn out I can't fight no more
Somehow I knew you long ago
Back when we had a million miles to go
But my true thoughts you'll never know

I gaze at the rooftops, the skeleton trees
The sun coming up, hear footsteps, jangling keys
The T.V. towers send their signals to you
Wherever you may be, they'll always come through
I do feel it was meant to be
I'm the traitor you are the sea
Swiftly sinking, drowning me

On the dark road headlights blind my eyes
I don't know where we're headed, but I hear your cries
You turned my heart into a wild cyclone
I ain't afraid to bleed or to be alone
I long to feel your finger-tips
But it will feel like the lashes of a hundred whips
If we stay together alone like this

I dreamt we danced to an old-time string band
And raised our children off of the land
To these songs we revel in harmony
These razor sad dirges in a minor key
Slowly falling from the world we know
Following a path where cool water flows
The truth may be out there along the road
