The River
I was dreaming of a mountain
In the sky above the flood
And a forest and a city
And a river made of blood
Baptist guy keeps getting closer
Tries to pull me down to the river
Have I been such a wayward daughter?
Hold my head under the water
(Take my hand now) Oh, then I started shouting
(We'll go walking) I felt like I was drowning
(On that mountain) Baptist, he keeps on plunging
(Above the flood) my hands, they keep on grabbing
(In the forest) his hair, a tangled nest
(We'll make a canoe) he smacks me across the chest
(Put it in the) "Oh, what have I done then, Father?"
(River of blood) "You've been a wayward daughter"
Left my mind on the riverbank
Left behind in the mud, it sank
Baptist guy, I gotta thank you
For the bath though I didn't want to
(When the river) I feel the harsh demands
(Becomes an ocean) made by the Baptist's hands
(Every spirit) he bends me across his knee
(Of every man) I'm backwards, I cannot see
(Will rise up and) there's filth streaming out of me
(We will recall that) there's water rushing over me
(We are all but) there's filth streaming out of me
(One blood again) there's water rushing over me
(I was dreaming) Baptist guy
(Of a mountain) keeps getting closer
(In the sky) tries to pull
(Above the flood) me down to the river
(And the forest) have I been
(And the city) such a wayward daughter?
(And the river) hold my head
(Made of blood) under the water
Oh, then I started shouting
I felt like I was drowning
