My Dog Spike
Grandma can I please have a puppy.
I was just five years old.
When grandma gave me that pup.
In a cardboard box.
On the floorboard in the middle of that ole truck.
She said you have to feed and water him.
Keep him warm and dry.
He will forever be your friend.
Well Spike grew with me.
And Spike ran with me thru the thick and thin.
He stayed with me in that ole tent in the back yard.
My best friend.
He was my best friend thru the fields and the hills.
Spike was a little brown n white Heinz fifty-seven.
Not a fancy dog.
But he was my best dog.
I was eleven years old September sixteenth nineteen sixty-five.
When mom woke me for school.
She said son I have some sad news.
Your father called from work.
He said I think Spike got hit last night.
He was laying along the highway.
So mom brother and I jumped in that ole Rambler.
We picked Spike up and wrapped him in a blanket.
I cried all day at school.
The longest day I could remember.
The world seems so cruel.
So, I remember what grandma said.
Keep your chin up son there be a better day.
Lessons that learn make a better way.
Make a better way.
So, take the words for what I say.
What say.
