It Was a Good Summer

The bell sounds now and we file in –
corralled and behaved as the new campaign begins.
But this time last week we heard the call of the wild.
We were all less student then and more child.
I'm sitting in my seat but my mind is far from here.
I'm still in the backyard with my feet in the grass and in the air
Jack Johnson, barbeque and laughter carried across the marsh
from children steady playing at Massengale until dark.
It was a good summer.
We'd go to bed at night bronzed and completely spent.
We watched exploding skies with red, tired eyes
from the charges that Dad sent.
We were beaten by the sun and the waves
and the ways of our carefree days.
But that's over now as daylight-savings fades.
It was a good summer.
