These Eyes

A baby bird died on my porch
and it freaked me out, so I kicked it in the yard
The sunlight peaks between the dangling leafs
Tree trunks hum a song of the summer breeze
I sit outside and watch the seasons pass;
orange leafs fall when it's fall at last

The light from the window made shadows that I had never seen before
I guess the sun set lower in the sky
The light from the window made shadows that I had never seen before

I got the news the other day
that you needed love, so you threw your life away
That baby bird won't fly, and it sure won't sing
No use for flight when you've got rotting wings
The devil knows that I can't stand the sights I see
He says, "if sin is death then I guess you're dead to me"

And the light from the window made shadows that I had never seen before
I guess these eyes need time to adjust
And the light from the window made shadows that I had never seen before

The grass in the meadow will bow down
and worship the man who made the rain
to bless the thirsty spring
The grass in the meadow will bow down
and wither like the men who prayed for rain
to bless the thirsty spring
