Interview - Live From Spotify NYC
Sandy: Which brings us to your newest album "Unrepentant Geraldines."
Tell us about... You're in the midst of an 80-day international tour
you were playing last night and tonight at The Beacon
How's it going and what's it like -Is this... Does it feel like in terms of the album when you play these new songs, people...
It's like a return to your earlier work or how are people receiving it?
Tori: Well, people receive it... You have to understand.
You, you're very aware of this, you all are standing in daylight
listening to a woman say 'I hate you'
It's not the most comfortable thing for either of us but I'm an old rock dog
so I could, I could be your mom - most of you. So, I'm singing and swooning you and you're kinda thinking 'This lady is singing to me.'
See, when you perform at night,
you all are in disguise. You can be anybody you want.
You could turn into vampires or mermaids or a bit of both!
That's fine 'cause I see lights when I play, you're a geometric shape.
So you might think 'Oh, I'm a nerd.' I, I'm kind of a brilliant nerd 'cause I hear some of you thinking but this is really uncomfortable. And so,
that's why when you perform at night it's a very different setting than right now.
So I'm clapping for you all because it's very tough having some lady sing this stuff to you in broad daylight when you can't be a vampire-mermaid mix.
That's how the tours go.
Sandy: You have OBVIOUSLY been to a Halloween party.
Tori: I'd like to come to your Halloween party! (But I'd like to meet each of you first)
Sandy: You are now invited!
Tori: No, I'd want to meet each of you first before I meet you on Halloween.
And then! And then after. Okay, the next song took four years to write 'cause this lady was... She's a very cool gal and she was lost in her life and
I said 'So what are you gonna do with your life?'
And she said 'I don't, I don't know. I'm going to turn oysters in the sand.'
And I went 'Oh! Hold that thought' and we were sitting at a fire in Ireland throwing back mold wine and I'm thinking 'Oh, I don't have a pen! I've gotta write this in the dirt - Oysters in the sand' and come back the next morning and make sure that that was the line she said and it was the line she said. And I just thought about that idea of turning oysters in the sand and... Okay here we go.
