Two Weeks

It's been raining now,
Pushing two weeks
Really brings out them colors
In the leaves

It's been raining now,
Pushing three months
It really brings out them black, black blues
In my baby's eyes

There's water in the ice, she smiled, straight across,
Staring at me for another drink
And I'd give her anything at this four o'clock hour
Just to see the sun rise up on her, again

Lights on the road show
The ghosts of cursive branches
Like her curling hand writing that is filling up my dreams
Lines of metal lattice shadows
The chain links that the trees grow through
I'm just thinking about the ice cubes in her glass

And it's not the chopping, I said,
That I really enjoy
But the feeling of the axe in my hand
When I'm stacking wood for the long winter coming
For the small house we'd buy on borrowed money

It's been raining now,
Since I don't know when,
And I've got more water
Than any man.
