I Can't Sleep

The night is still, the crescent's waned
The blood is pulsing in my veins
Uneasy is the mind that finds the worst is yet to come
The doors are locked, the shades are drawn
I pray I see sweet 'morrow's dawn
Fortunate, the eyes that come to rise with the sun

Tip-toe, so slow
To the stair and 'Oh, no!'
A figure in the dark imparts a shiver to my bones
Alas, a rack of coats and hats
Has nearly spurred my heart to lapse
Allayed, the switch is thrown
Still I feel I'm not alone

I can't sleep

A brief retreat into repose
Is shattered by an awful blow
I must investigate the source of such a dreadful sound
Unto the stair I wend again
The door's ajar but what's come in?
Frozen in my fear, feet adhered to the ground

Eyes wide, breath short
To the hilt in ill sorts
The shadow of a man, it stands where light had rightly shown
Each pace retraced
Fleeing in extreme haste
'Intruder to my home, I cannot rest lest you not go!'

The drubbing of the floor
It's drawing near my door
In the darkness I discern
The knob begins to turn
