Ride The Night Away (feat. Steven Van Zandt)) [With Jimmy Barnes Commentary]
When I was doing, ah, "Working Class Man" album
Steven sent a song via, ah, Garry Gersh, who was the A&R man for Geffen records at the time
And I got this song, it was a, this little demo, it was on, it was a dictaphone and-and-and-and
Steve Jordan had written the song specifically for me
When I got it, it was just the perfect demo
So virtually I just did, did my, put it in the right key for me and did it
Ah, I always wanted to have, I always, you know, being a fan of the, of Bruce's
And being a fan of-of-of Little Steven
I just always wondered-wondered how he would've approached the song
So ah, when we got the opportunity and we were, I, you know
I've be a fan of Springsteen since '73 so, you know, I'm
The E-Street Band are one of, you know, one of my favourite bands in the world
Um, and when-when I got the, I'd never seen them live
Because I just, we never crossed paths and I was always working when they were touring
But when they came this time and I actually worked with them
And ah, I-I just set-set the idea in my head that I'd like to do this song with Little Steven
So um, I went up to Steven when we were doing the shows in um, New Zealand
And I said, um, look you're ah, this-this song that you sent me 30 years ago
I wouldn't mind recording it with you
And he was a fan and he's such, he's just a musician, he loves music
Steve, all Steven wants to do is play music and have fun
So Steven came to my house, um, and my son played drums
And I think virtually, once again, it was take three
But-but we ended up staying 12 hours and just doing, you know, just talkin'
Getting him to tell us stories about "The Sopranos", you know, but-but playing music
And got him to play the guitar solо and I got to sing some harmonies on it
Um, and I remember sittin' with him, and ah and he just, he brought this different
My-, the way I played, it was sort of like big and rocky, he made it-he-this
It's a classic Keith Richards quote, you know, anybody can rock but, you know, the art is rolling
He brought this rolling thing to it, that made it swagger and move and
And I think that that's really the way that-that he envisaged the song when he first wrote it
So ah, I think Steven's breathed some life into the song which is ah, which was there and just needed to be resuscitated
I, I got something baby on my mind
It's tearing me up inside
And I got to let loose tonight, baby, now
I know you can see what I'm goin' through
Everybody telling me what to do
Yeah, I need somebody to talk to
Well, I'm different, I can feel the changes
But I can't turn back the pages
And our hearts are all we have to save us
Come on, save me tonight
We gonna ride the night away
We gonna ride, ride the night away
Well, there ain't no time left to borrow
I guess I have to think about it tomorrow
We gonna ride, ride the night away
Yeah
And I got a gun pointed at my head
Yeah, I put it there by myself
I can't ask it but I need some help, baby now
Let me tell you honey I, got a fire burning in my soul
Yes, I'm dangerous and out of control
And tonight I wanna let it go, yeah
Yes, I do now
And I can't look back, baby, I tried
It's too late for me to compromise
And I need somebody by my side
Come on, save me tonight
We gonna ride the night away
Yeah, babe, we gonna ride the night away
Yeah, there ain't no time left to borrow
I have to think about it tomorrow
We gonna ride, ride the night away, oh
I can't look back, baby, I've tried
It's too late for me to compromise
And I need somebody by my side
Come on, save me tonight
We gonna ride the night away
Yeah, babe, we gonna ride the night away
Well, there ain't no time left to borrow
I guess I'll have to think about it tomorrow
We gonna ride, ride the night away
(Ride the night away)
Let me tell ya gonna ride, ride the night away (ride the night away)
Come on, we're gonna ride (ride the night away)
Yeah, I said we're gonna ride (ride the night away) come on
Yeah, we're gonna ride, ride the night away
Hey, I tell, we're gonna ride (ride the night away)
