Ship of Fever

Cut loose the ropes and hopes of voyagers
Wharfies whispering 'quarantine'
Flag flies high in the sky on the mast
Yellow and black yelling 'unclean'

Hauled far out to sea

News travels fast, hooves crushing gravel
Past ivy-clad columns to the governor
Pen passes paper, a safer solution
Sparing citation of cholera

Plantations to save

A thousand horizons from where they set sail
On a foggy dawn
Long after the land had sunk into silence
They turned to face another shore

A glow in the distance, black smoke rising
Then disappearing in the haze
Lining the walls, the fidgeting soldiery
Looked out to sea, and then away

Ships go down all the time
Looking out for yours and mine
