Counterclock

I saw a man reflecting in a mug of tea
I left a small "so long" on Momma's coat
I wondered why fear had stronger arms than me
I wondered why breath was hot in the throat and then got cold

I thought of a chin shrouded in carpet
And all the smiles that ran atop the rug
Why can't machines do our shopping
And why don't we spend more time in the rain before we're old?

I won't have answers for a long time
I missed my mark by a few hundred miles, too busy talking
And I won't see the rain for a good while, but I'll stay here while the ground dries up
'Cause the plans I've got are in deserts and cities

Some folks just don't care for each other
They like to go for lunch and rip up paper
They know to talk in terms that aren't described with color
They know where to park, their card's APR, and they miss their homes

I don't have answers. There's no time
I shouldn't look back. I'm sure it's fine the way I left it
I won't see the rain for a good while, but I'll stay here while the ground dries up
'Cause the plans I've got are in deserts and cities
