Sunset

Not young nor old I found a string of sound
And it felt like bodies joined
Two rivers meet, their currents double-wide
Two herons fishing on the shallow side

I used to hum it low before I knew
About the end of things like trails
And I'd walk near side-streams only
Not drawn below by rippled shale

But how lovely the stream bed
Broken light in dithyramb
Then I saw the stream bed only
And bore my heart to the water there

Not young nor old and I still play the tune
Since then I lot's been tossed to shoals
The herons flew and cut-banks choked the stream
How nice it'd be if songs kept water clean

I didn't know how I might use this
I couldn't promise it would grow
I used to think it'd be about a sunset
In a way, that's how it goes
