Every Night

Every night, I crept from the bed where my lover lay
And took out all my checkbooks and wrote void on every page
And slid into the night like an eel glides into the void beneath the sea
Every night, I creep from the bed
And cut up all my credit cards and cut off my hair
And burn all my passports and forget my own name
And leave for some place where they've all done the same

Every night I burn down my house
Flames circle the suburbs, they devour the town
And cover my exit, and help me escape
It's what they all might do if they were awake

Every night I put on my dress
And go into the city without my face
Where nobody knows me, or know himself
And puts up his image on a forgotten shelf
