Succumb All Ye Faithful

It's only September but remember
Get in early it's nearly here
They're filling the shelves up, elves are dumbstruck
It get's earlier every year

And we all feel the pressure come down
To create this illusion of family perfection
Made to feel obligation to drown
In debt to pay for this special day of the year

And next it's the adverts, drip fed excerpts
Of the life they think you want to own
They seek to cajole you and control you
Splash that cash on something flash

It's all a mirage, all smoke and dust
When you wake up on Boxing Day, drunk and bust
After the party there's no more beer
Who cares! It's the happiest day of the year

Grab yourself a great bargain, it's Black Friday
Fisticuffs for stuff you don't need
Fight your way to the check out, take no prisoners
Serious business just get
Out of my way if you want to see Christmas Day

And hearing the music, hearing those songs
Is driving you crazy and making you long
For selective hearing or a hole in the head
There's still four weeks to go and you wish you were dead

Succumb all ye faithful, Christian Soldiers
Marching boldly to the shops
Go worship your new Gods, Greed and Envy
Gluttony and Wrath and Sloth and Donner and Blitzen
And Prancer and Dancer, they don't have the
Answers you're looking for

The message is broken, or lost or mislaid
It's not just about getting horribly sleighed
And watching the Queen and the Street and then Elf
It's not about what you can get for yourself
Consider your actions, step back and appraise
If this is how Christ would have spent his birthday
And if your conclusion is "probably not"
Then think about if not this then what?

Bet they won't play
This at Sainsburys
Bet they won't play
This at Sainsburys
