A Sandcastle Builder's Story
As a child you owned the entire ocean
You built sandcastles of which the mermaids dreamed
Your little hands, yes, yes, they caused quite a commotion
Next to the waterline as the salty sea saves gleamed
Oh, what a thing it is to grow up
Oh, what a thing it is indeed
But dad would yell until his voice fell out the window
And mom would sleep underneath of your bed for days
While sainted fireflies flew around you and they glowed
They became your friends which you greeted to play
Oh, what a thing it is to grow up
Oh, what a thing it is indeed
Oh, what a thing it is to grow up
Oh, what a thing it is indeed
When the winter came the fireflies froze over
But you found a brand-new playmate which you could adore
You'd laugh and steal the flowers hiding in the clover
Until one night and you both you knew you needed more
Oh, what a thing it is to grow up
Oh, what a thing it is indeed
Oh, what a thing it is to grow up
Oh, what a thing it is indeed
You soon knew that you'd have to leave your mom and dad
To leave the beach which you once loved to comb
You packed your bag, but you did not feel sad
Because you had a lover to bring as you roam
Oh, what a thing it is to grow up
Oh, what a thing it is indeed
Oh, what a thing it is to grow up
Oh, what a thing it is indeed
But later you would drink until you were not seeing
She cried, she cried in her pillow at night
You remember your mom and dad at their own peak
The way they both used to kick and scream and fight
You smiled, because you knew you were doing alright
Alright, alright
