Herd Boy

He stands by the bridge where the brown waters roll
In the rain in his duster and his hat with a hole
Stained by the runoff of the fields up above
Sliced by steel plows and hemorrhaging mud
Yeah his boots were all covered by rivers of mud

Herd-boy (echo herd-boy) Herd-boy (echo herd-boy)
Your family's depending on their faithful herd-boy
The neighbors are thankful on their trusted herd-boy

His day starts out early before his friends go to school
He'll wait by the bridge 'till the milking is through
Then they'll bring him their cows for his care and concern
Then he'll take them to pastures till the darkness returns
Back home to their owners when darkness returns

Herd-boy (echo herd-boy) Herd-boy (echo herd-boy)
Your family's depending on their faithful herd-boy
The neighbors are thankful on their trusted herd-boy

His father ran off before he was ten
Then his mother got sick and it was all up to him
Though barely thirteen, it was his task to provide
Provisions and shelter, for a family of five
The only provider for a family of five

Herd-boy (echo herd-boy) Herd-boy (echo herd-boy)
Your family's depending on their faithful herd-boy
The neighbors are thankful on their trusted herd-boy

With his dog by his side and his rifle (staff) in his hand
Back then there were no fences surrounding the land
Wolves and packs of coyotes looking for easy prey
And it was the herd boy's job to keep them all away
The herd boy did his job, and kept his cattle safe

Herd-boy (echo herd-boy) Herd-boy (echo herd-boy)
Your family's depending on their faithful herd-boy
The neighbors are thankful on their trusted herd-boy

He was called the herd boy, minding cows and their calves
Down range to green pastures, where he'd keep them all safe
Whether raining or snowing, by his cows he will be
When the going was hard, he remembered Psalm 23
And King David, the shepherd, and Psalm 23

Herd-boy (echo herd-boy) Herd-boy (echo herd-boy)
Surely Your goodness and love follow me
He always took comfort in Psalm 23

Herd-boy (echo herd-boy) Herd-boy (echo herd-boy)
Your family's depending on their faithful herd-boy
The neighbors are thankful on their trusted herd-boy
