Prisons
As the sun of early morning
Casts it's light across the field
And the prairie bluestem shimmers
Like a luminescent sea
How I long to taste my freedom
Cast these shackles from my wrists
But I cannot leave my dungeon
There's no escape from all of this
(You know) not all prisons look the same
Yet a prison is a prison no matter what the name
Just like a six by eight foot cell, under lock and key
Some are held by guilt or fear, Some are just like me
So afraid am I that I might fail
Too terror-struck to try
My goals and dreams die unfulfilled
And still I wonder why
As pride and obstinance persist
And keep me safe inside
My private 6 by 8 foot room
Protected from outside
(You know) not all prisons look the same
Yet a prison is a prison no matter what the name
Just like a six by eight foot cell, under lock and key
Some are held by guilt or fear, Some are just like me
I am the king of cope out
And I'm prone to rationalize
There are others so much better
Or a change would be unwise
Why bother even trying
When it's likely I will fail
But if I'm scared to cross the threshold
Then I'll always stay in jail
(You know) not all prisons look the same
Yet a prison is a prison no matter what the name
Just like a six by eight foot cell, under lock and key
Some are held by guilt or fear, Some are just like me
Without trying there's no failure
Without failure no success
There is often pain and heartache
But without it nothingness
Without starting no succeeding
Without down there's no above
Without sin there's no forgiveness
And forgiveness equals love
Not all prisons look the same
Yet a prison is a prison no matter what the name
Just like a six by eight foot cell, under lock and key
Don't be held by guilt or fear, don't end up like me
Casts it's light across the field
And the prairie bluestem shimmers
Like a luminescent sea
How I long to taste my freedom
Cast these shackles from my wrists
But I cannot leave my dungeon
There's no escape from all of this
(You know) not all prisons look the same
