Read Between the Lines

Sometimes you gotta read between the lines, and see what you're not supposed to see
Sometimes we gotta reach beyond the lines, and be what you're not supposed to be

Supposed as in assumed, what they want me to do
How they suggest I act so I could be used like a tool
But I'm human, refusin' to be used in ways that just aren't me
I'm sorry if I see what I'm not supposed to see
But you couldn't tell me what it was not to be looking for
And after I seen one, I seen more
Turn on the news and what you hear
Same old, same old story of the year
But if you just ask yourself, what do they want you to know?
Then the opposite of obvious is exactly the mo-tive
For them to have you live, how they want
So you don't interfere, unless they want
But you see it's necessary to hold out on their clench
Flex your strength and wrench free of their grasp
Spontaneity, freedom at last

Free your mind, read between the lines, see what you will find
Free your mind, read between the lines, see what you will find

I live outside the box 'cause I don't like the way it talks
I got my own views, that's not reflected on in your remarks
Media sharks can't handle this monopolistic monsoon
Tycoon tongue twister, dear Mr. Newscaster
Let me tell you what you're doin' when you make assumptions
You cause other people to assume as well, to accept what you say to serve your function
And thus in, frequently repeating lots of opinions based on what you assume
Propaganda works this way to bring your doom
Don't jump to assumptions when you think
Don't quickly come to conclusions when you confide
Keep your third eyelid open wide, don't blink
Don't write out of blind sight, read between the lines

Sometimes you gotta read between the lines, and see what you're not supposed to see
Sometimes we gotta reach beyond the lines, and be what you're not supposed to be

I tend to never view TV
But I've seen a TV and it seems to be feeding me
Negative frequencies as I stared focused completely
Where's the love and hope that I needed in me
Peace and happiness, please, have some decency
At least some scrutiny, why did they want to ruin me?
You know they do it, you see, disrespecting unity
By selecting purely bad news, commented on with sad views
They're affecting people's attitudes, making me want to smash a tube
They say whatever's clever enough, attracting you
Impacting you with advertisements and jingles from some crummy commercial
Taking up space in your head until your memory's full
Using reversal psychology to subliminally market
To target youthful lives to shoot full of lies
That's how they create demand to buy their supplies
Remove the wool from over your eyes

Free your mind, read between the lines, see what you will find
Free your mind, read between the lines, see what you will find

When the media says voter turnout is low
And the reason is because we're satisfied to vote
When the president says we're going to war with terrorists
And nobody asks why they were pissed, didn't care where our error is
When they make various family sitcoms
Nothing real, no ideas, only problems telling you how to live wrong
When they play songs demeaning to our being
Glorifying horrifying stories of surviving as crack fiends, I ain't believing
How almost everyone emceeing on TV is black
Because in reality, I ain't seein' that
And that's just the tip of the iceberg
Hip hop is a culture that's living and breathing, changing to fit whatever you like, word
But the media would like you to observe and emulate what they create
So you can sweat and slave to earn money to pay every day until your grave
They make you want a crave all the crap they offer
Because your purchase is the missing piece completing the cycle of slaughter
Sometimes you gotta get smarter

Sometimes you gotta read between the lines, and see what you're not supposed to see
Sometimes we gotta reach beyond the lines, and be what you're not supposed to be
Free your mind, read between the lines, see what you will find
